Just got this album. It is the debut record from the mind of Annie Clark, who has formerly played guitar for the Polyphonic Spree and with the touring band behind Sufjan Stevens. I can't even begin to describe it; yes, she's a bit of a weirdo. There are jazzy things, there's choral stuff, there are even beautiful woodwind and piano lines. Some of it sounds like a walk through Paris, some is eerily dark with anticipation. In no time, a heavy drum beat with hand claps will fall into a surreal walk with only sleigh bells; dissonant distorted guitar will swing smoothly to a nylon acoustic–these transitions some how make sense on this record.
What a writer, though–this is highly creative music and a joy to listen to.
For the sake of the budget and to give this CD proper attention, I will purchase her more recent Actor next month. Until then.
